Young Writer Resources
NEW OPPORTUNITY!

June 2007

Dear Ms. Milner,

Launch Pad: Where Young Authors and Illustrators Take Off! is a new  magazine devoted to publishing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, book reviews, and artwork by children ages 6-12. Would you please consider having children submit some creative writing (with or without illustrations) from any of your workshops this summer?

The magazine offers children a wonderful opportunity to get
published!  If you know of any aspiring young authors, please let
them know about our magazine. Also, please feel free to share the
call for submissions with your instructors or any other interested
parties or listservs.

Sincerely,

Paul Kelsey

For the last few years, schools across the nation have organized a No Name-Calling Week to focus attention on the problem of name calling in schools, and to provide students and teachers with the tools and inspiration to launch on-going dialogues about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities.

THIS YEAR: January 21-25, 2008

There should be a Creative Expression Contest for students to submit their poems, essays, artwork, stories and music addressing the problems of name calling and bullying.

The submissions deadline hasn't been announced, but it's normally in December, so watch this website for more details:

Books for Young Writers

...is a new section I've just started, thanks to a suggestion from Hodder Children's Books in the United Kingdom. They thought the resources were pretty cool, and sent me copies of two GREAT new books for young writers that will be available in February of 2003. So from now on, I'll review all the books I get for young writers and talk about them HERE.

Check it out if you have a minute.

No word on a contest for 2007 or 2008, but here is a link to the winners for 2006:

(OLD NEWS) SPECIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT
FROM OPRAH!

On January 16th (or 17th), 2006 the Oprah Show is doing something WE’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE. In addition to announcing my new book club selection-which I promise is mandator reading for every human being on the planet-I will also announce Oprah’s National High School Essay Contest to accompany it.

The essay contest will be based on the book I reveal and is open to high school students across America. Based on their essays, a panel of learned judges will select 50 high school students and one designated parent or guardian for each to receive an educational trip and participate in a special Oprah show in February.

To support this nationwide initiative, my website-Oprah.com-will offer comprehensive study materials for students, teachers and parents. This is an important book that I hope will be discussed in homes and schools across the country.

To make this happen I’ll need your help. Please get the word out to your students, their parents and their teachers.

Remember, I will announce the title of the book I’ve chosen on the air, Monday, January 16th (or 17th), 2006. So check your local listings for times. Immediately after that announcement, the essay contest begins and the deadline for the entries is Monday, February 6, 2006 so time is of the essence.

For more details on Oprah’s National High School Essay Contest go to Oprah.com. We’re hoping to get as many students and educators involved as possible.

Thank you for working with us.

Finally, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for all you do to make education a priority in your circle of influence.  I applaud you for this important work.
Here’s to Books! Happy Holidays!
